CHAPTER EIGHT
Because she wasnât you.
The thought popped into Willâs mind and he was a little stunned. But maybe he shouldnât be. The other day while his sister was freaking out heâd told her she waited until Luke came along and got it right. He hadnât waited and got it wrong because the woman heâd proposed to wasnât April. He hadnât said as much to Kim, but it must have been in the back of his mind.
He would probably regret that decision for the rest of his life.
And now he was lucky enough to be standing in her kitchen after sharing pizza and a bottle of wine. It was more than he deserved.
âWill?â April held up her hands. âNever mind. Forget I said anything. I shouldnât have asked. Itâs really none of my business and, for the record, Iâm blaming it on the wine. Seriously, Iâm sorryââ
He touched a finger to her lips to stop the words. âYou have nothing to apologize for. I donât mind telling you what happened. More than anyone else you have a right to know. Obviously, you already realize what an idiot I am.â
âI donât think itâs fair or right to factor in IQ in terms of relationship analysis. Being smart has nothing to do with matters of the heart.â She leaned back against the counter in front of the sink and folded her arms over her chest. âFor what itâs worth, I donât think youâre an idiot.â
He stood across from her with the kitchen island to his back. âYouâre very gracious even though I donât deserve it.â
âNo, you donât,â she teased. âBut I canât help it. A flaw in my personality.â
âOkay. As flaws go itâs not bad.â He smiled, then wondered how it was that she could do that when he was contemplating this deeply personal disappointment in himself. It was a mistake he still took very hard. Maybe telling her would be a good thing, help put it to rest forever. âThe reality is that the marriage was doomed from the start.â
âWhy do you say that?â
Will didnât expect to hear genuine sympathy in her voice. Probably because heâd treated her so badly and felt fortunate that she was even talking to him. She had every right to be glad things hadnât worked out for him. Who could blame her for it? But he didnât see anything like that in the compassionate expression on her face.
âShe was just there, a bar where cops hang out after a shift. She was pretty. Flirty.â
âThatâs not good.â
For the life of him he couldnât figure out why she looked guilty all of a sudden. Maybe she did have a little he-got-what-was-coming-to-him going on.
âAnyway, she was there and available. I was lonely.â
âI understand.â A little sadness crept into her voice.
Now it was his turn to feel guilty. He looked down at her and in the dim light he could see sorrow on her face, a bruised expression in her eyes for just a moment. Because heâd been the
